Yes, now everyone of us can! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joseph Maas

Poverty in developing countries is a growing concern across the globe. Recent economic conditions have many of us wondering how we can help, even with limited resources. And we want to know that our dollars are being spent wisely. Now there's a way -- become a micro-leding team member at TrueChange.net!

"Microfinance offers poor people access to basic financial services such as loans, savings, money transfer services and microinsurance. People living in poverty, like everyone else, need a diverse range of financial services to run their businesses, build assets, smooth consumption, and manage risk."

TrueChange.net is a team of web masters, web site owners, hosting providers and other internet users established at Kiva.org -- the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to unique entrepreneurs in the developing world. The beauty of Kiva.org is the transparency of the process.

"Any real solution to the issues of povery, economic independence and self-determination must reach across national and political boundaries in new and inventive ways," says Joseph Maas, team captain. "TrueChange.net is teaming up with Kiva.org because we see the value in micro-lending and wish to build and expand the micro-lending community."

Since inception, micro-lending has produced very positive results within developing countries by encouraging entrepreneurship and business development on a grass-roots level. Unlike charitable contributions (for which no doubt there will always be a need), micro-lending by its very nature sows the seeds of creativity and sustained growth.

Clearly the benefits can reach far beyond the loan recipient. Common examples include:

-- Funding a dairy rancher to purchase another milking cow means that better nourishment is available for the people of his village through the cold winter months.

-- Funding a garment maker to purchase two additional sewing machines results in local employment for six more people. (That's six people that no longer need to work at the grueling rock quarry or at the shoe factory 20 miles away).

-- Funding a carpenter to buy better tools results in local homes with better roofs and windows - and fewer incidents of crippling but preventable diseases such as pneumonia and malaria.

Summary of how it works:

Select an applicant from Kiva's extensive and detailed list of entreprenuers. Lend as little as $25 using PayPal or your credit card. (Be sure to sign up through TrueChange.net for additional benefits.) Kiva distributes the funds to the local field partner who delivers the funds to the entrepreneur. When the loan is repaid, the field partner retains the interest and any fees to maintain their operation. The principle of the loan is deposited in your account at Kiva. You have the option to lend the money again, withdraw the funds, or donate directly to Kiva.org.

In more detail:

Each loan applicant is interviewed in detail by the local micro-lending field-partner or micro-lending institution (MFI). The prospect has been found to be reliable, in good standing in their local community, and is deemed able to pay back the loan within a reasonable period of time. Loan recipients are usually the more outstanding entrepreneurs in their communities. A majority of micro-loans given are to women entrepreneurs because they are more often disqualified by the larger financial institutions.

Interest and fees charged to the borrower are below normal, in some cases far below normal, and are retained by the local micro-lending field-partner or MFI for their local operations. When the load is repaid, the principle returns to the micro-lender. Historically, there is just a 2% default rate where some or all of the original loan is not repaid (far below financial lending institution norms). Because their is some risk, both TrueChange.net and Kiva.org recommend lending smaller amounts to several entrepreneurs rather than lending larger sums to just a few. Kiva.org accepts donations outside of loan transactions to support their operations.

Kiva provides a data-rich transparent lending platform that is unique in the financial industry. Regular progress reports are posted on the Kiva.org website. Each lender and each loan recipient have an identity, helping to make the entire processes very personal. You get to see the results of your loan!

We invite to you participate in this growing opportunity to be a direct force for positive change. Participate in the micro-lending community by joining our TrueChange.net lending group. It's open to everyone. Start lending with as little as $25. Yes, now YOU can take steps to personally and positively change the world.
